Symbolism in Gracyn’s Chapel

“On October 24, I messaged my friends back home and said “I’ve got to share with you my most favorite part about weddings: Symbolism!” I proceeded to give them a short run down on my take of your absolutely stunning venue there in New Boston. I’m no expert in these things but I do have a fondness for the meaning behind shapes and numbers and images – I’m convinced you do too. Even if you couldn’t say why you were drawn to these numbers and shapes, you intrinsically seemed to know. Here is what I found your venue to say through geometry and numbers:

First we begin with the doors. Of course they open as TWO. You would not have a single door to the chapel. Why? Because One is whole, complete and forever alone. Two doors represent the duplicity of male and female but also their balance. After all, we stand on two feet, reach with two hands, see with two eyes and hear with two ears. Two is the first even number. It represents the partnership that is about to come together. Traditionally the number 2 is considered feminine which is perfect for the bride who elegantly walks through these two doors and down towards her perfect opposite who awaits her at the front of the chapel.

As she walks down the aisle, there above the bride lay THREE beams over her head. 3 is a rather magical number. We get a sense of completion with the number three. Our fairy tales grant three wishes and we even count down to three when giving a child a chance to escape trouble. The first odd number and often considered male, three stands for the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. It represents Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge, birth, life and death and even virgin, mother and crone. These three beams stand as a testament to the bride’s life as she walks down the aisle. With all her family and friends looking on, they stand as witness to her past, present and future. Such a simple act of walking down a path to the front of the congregation is emotional not just because this woman is so beautiful but because it is symbolic of the girl she was and the woman she is now, and will become.

After stepping up TWO steps (how poetic) the bride and groom have come together about to be made one inside the number SIX. The chapel is cut out into an uneven HEXAGON where the soon to be couple now stand on stage. This is where the symbolism really takes off! Six is the perfect number. God created the world in 6 days. The multiplication of the number 2 and 3, the even and the odd, creates the number six making it the universal number for love. 6 can be split into two 3s. Three as we have already described, is a very magical number. Three makes a triangle. Two triangles make six points which form the Star of David. The star represents the old saying “As above so below”. How wonderful a statement when joining two people together under heaven here on earth! Six is universally known to be the number of marriage, union and perfection. It represents structure and order the same way a honey bee who walks on six legs and makes hexagons out of wax represents symmetry. The hexagon forms the “Flower of Life” which represents the union of everything. In summary, you have the couple standing in the most ancient symbolic shape of love, union and marriage - how perfect can you get!?

Oh but then we look past that first hexagon and we see much more clearly a PENTAGON. The number FIVE stands for all things human. 2+3=5 or when 2 (feminine) marries 3 (male) they create 5. This makes the number five the universal number for reproduction and life. We as humans have five fingers, five toes and when spreading out our limbs, we make five points. Humans have 5 vital organs and 5 senses. 5 is the number for man, so what does it mean to have a pentagon inside of a hexagon for a wedding? To me, this represents the couple’s place on this earth. As humans we are embraced by love and perfection. It surrounds us as the hexagon does over the pentagon. Under the love of 6, man (3) and woman (2) come together and marry (5), producing life!

Which leads us to yet another hexagon, the final shape in the chapel. This hexagon is the most obvious and the most pronounced of shapes. You actually have this hexagon decorated and it stands center stage. Of all the shapes you could have chosen, why this shape? Why six? This is my favorite piece because for this hexagon to stand inside of the pentagon, it pronounces boldly that as 2 and 3 marry one another and become 5 they create within themselves 6, the number of love and perfection. When I look toward the stage I see the first hexagon representing God in his perfection and love encircling the man and woman who are represented by the pentagram. But the man and woman have within them an even bolder and pronounced love that is being shown through by the hexagon inside the pentagon. They have come together to make God’s love evident through their own love.  All of that is being said through these shapes and numbers!

Now, as fantastic as it is to see this symbolism, it delighted me just as much to not be able to find other shapes or numbers. You didn’t use any shapes past the number 6. A very wise move. After all, 6 is the perfect number for a wedding. Also, 7 is the number for virginity which is definitely not a number you want at a wedding! We count to six and that’s as far as it goes for good reason. 1 is not seen here because as I noted before, it is the loneliest number. The only other number we are missing is FOUR. Where is it? Where is the SQUARE? 4 represents the earth, foundations, and the four elements (water, earth, air and fire). The cross is also made up by the number 4 giving it the added meaning of protection. These things are all very important but are not very “fun” when compared to the other numbers. Leaving it out may have seemed the obvious choice. Only, you didn’t leave 4 out. You recognized its importance. You left 4 out of the chapel and instead had a square waiting for everyone to receive it OUTSIDE. This was so beautiful. Foundation and protection can be found in our family and when outside of the chapel, a place of unity and magic and love, the bride and groom step out and are celebrated by four. Yes, family can be a bit boxed in, stuck in their ways and unexciting but family gives every person their footing. Family acts as a person’s security and shelter just like how a four walled building stands as our home. I stood right next to the metal square you had standing on the patio as me and the rest of the family stood cheering Allie and Micah on for a kiss. I could not have planned that more beautifully myself.

The symbolism, the numerology and the placement of each shape was done to perfection and it moved me to write you this letter. I hope this brings you joy as it did me. If anyone ever asks you why you chose two doors to the chapel rather than one, or why there is a hexagon on the chapel stage or why a metal square stands proudly on the patio, I hope you can smile gracefully at their unawareness and share with them just a glimpse of the magic you have beaming in your venue. “

Giving the Bride Away

In honor of Father’s Day, I did a little research and found the reason why it is tradition for the father to walk the bride down the aisle. It is a little sexist, but the tradition comes from the era when women were owned by men. It is the symbol of transferring the ownership of the bride from her father to her new husband.

Although this can leave a sour taste in your mouth, I believe it can also symbolize the confirmation that the bride’s family trusts the groom to provide, protect, and honor their daughter. A father-daughter relationship is a bond like no other. No one in this world can love a girl more than her father. So it actually quite poetic for the father (or father figure) to walk by his daughter’s side on her big day and to hand her over to her soon to be husband.

Memorial Day - Honoring Those We Love On Our Wedding Day

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal”

Wedding Days are one of the happiest days of our life. Although it can be difficult to create a memory without a loved one present, honoring them on your wedding day can bring you peace knowing they are smiling down on you.

I’ve found a few options on how to honor those who have selflessly put our country first and fought for our freedom. Today and everyday we thank them for our service.

Now here are ways to honor them and allow them to be apart or your wedding day:

Tips when shopping for your Wedding Dress

Partnering with Gracyn Elizabeth Bride, we have hosted several VIB’s! They are so much fun and make wedding dress shopping a breeze. To make the experience even better, we have gotten together and come up with a few tips and tricks!

  1. Style your hair like you would on your Wedding Day. This will make it easier to envision what you will look like on the day of!

  2. Bring the undergarments you would wear on the big day with you. You know, the ones that suck you in the right places. Some brides have even left the appointment to run over to the mall to grab some real quick.

  3. Go into the appointment with an open mind. We have seen time and time again brides walking in saying they want sleeves or don’t want strapless. Then they walk out with the dress of their dreams that was completely opposite of what they thought they would love.

  4. Don’t stress about the dress size. Bridal sizing is completely different than normal clothes. So don’t get in your own head about the size of the dress. Focus more on what makes you feel good.

  5. Remove your bra when trying on dresses. Most bridal gowns have great structure and foundation. Bras are not usually needed. Breast enhancement can also be added to the dress through alterations.

Why it is Good Luck if it Rains on your Wedding Day

I checked the weather forecast for the week and apparently it is supposed to rain for 40 days and 40 nights.. Okay, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. I know how stressful it can be to depend on the weather for your wedding, but I recently discovered the reason why it is good luck if it rains on your wedding day!

Getting married is also referred to as “tying the knot”. Well, when you tie a knot in rope, if it gets wet, it is more difficult to untie. Therefore, when it rains on your wedding day, it is a sign that your marriage will become stronger!

So, future brides - stress no more about it raining on your wedding day! Not only will it bring good luck, but pictures are so much prettier when there is an overcast! I found a few off of Pinterest that are absolutely breathtaking!

Advice from a Bride to a Bride

I have asked my previous brides (yes, two) to give some advice for your wedding day. This is what they have come up with:

  1. Enjoy every single moment, because once its over you will be wishing that it wasn’t

  2. Soak it all in.. the whole day, because it will be a blur

  3. Bring card games to play with your girls while getting ready

  4. Eat and drink water while getting ready because you won’t have time during the reception

  5. Before leaving the bridal suite, make sure the ring bearer has the rings

  6. Have your girls bring their dresses and shoes the night before to make sure they have everything

  7. If you book a videographer, have them sound record your vows and add them to your wedding video

  8. Before the wedding day, write out a list of all the people you want to take group photos with so you don’t leave anyone out

  9. There will be hiccups, so roll with the punches and take everything in strides

  10. Know that everything will come together!

We did it!

Wow! What an eventful weekend! The Grand Opening, Rehearsal, Rehearsal Dinner, and the First Wedding! If you missed the Grand Opening / First Wedding, don’t worry - I have taken a thousand pictures.

Last weekend was a blast and I am so blessed that mostly everything went smoothly. It was a learning experience for sure. For example, boutonniere’s go on the same side as the pocket square.. Who knew? Also, double check that you’ve locked the round tables before putting decorations on them. And even before people are sitting at them. Pro Tip.

Like I said, it was a learning experience, but the first wedding being my brother, I could not have asked for a more perfect weekend. We laughed, we cried happy tears, and we danced the night away. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Carlow. I love y’all

Let’s look at a handful of pictures of the venue now that it is 90% finished. I am so excited for all of the weddings coming up who will create memories of their own that will last a lifetime!

The Chapel Door

Stained glass was one of the first items we picked out. We even did it before breaking ground on the venue.

It is also something I have been most excited for, because as you know, I love giving each building a little character.

To tie in the old English nursery rhyme - Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, we decided to go with a blue color for the stained glass. It is even prettier than I imagined!

Now, y’all know I am a sucker for cool back stories to make the venue even more special. Well this one came out of nowhere. We met with a stained glass specialist, Debbie Hogan, back in the fall. She had no clue where the venue was actually located. She only knew it was North of New Boston somewhere.

Well, after giving her the directions, as she turned off of Hwy 8 and rounded the curve, she almost cried…She lived on the property for the first 5 years of her life!! Is not that the craziest, but coolest thing?!

Below are a few pictures so you can see how BEAUTIFUL it turned out!

How to Create your Wedding Guest List

Deciding who to invite or better yet, who is going to get upset about not getting an invite, is the most stressful part when planning your wedding.

I have thought about this for weeks and weeks trying to create a strategy to narrow down the guest list so that it will fit venue occupancy and wedding budget. Aaaaand, I believe I have got it!

So, lets get started!

First, you put together your entire list, anyone and everyone you, your parents, fiance, fiances’ parents can think of to invite to your wedding.

Secondly, you form two lists- the A and B list.

The A list consists of immediate family and close friends. The A list is the list of people who without a doubt will be invited to the wedding.

Then, everyone else goes into the B list.

Now that you have your B list, you take each person and follow the flow diagram below.

This make take several times going through the diagram until you have your final wedding guest list count. I hope this helps and if you have any suggestions on how to make this better, please let me know!

I sent a picture of a scribbled diagram on a piece of paper to my good friend, April Hackney, and she sent this back. She is so talented and can do pretty much anything! (you would believe me if you saw the drawing I sent her).If you need anyone to …

Construction Update

April is right around the corner and we have been working hard over here at Four Fifteen! The snow pushed us back, but this past week we have knocked off some BIG items. Thankfully the weather has been amazing and we are back on schedule. Whoop Whoop! The courtyard and sidewalks were poured and I am feeling so spoiled walking around on the concrete. Y’all, I can wash all of my shoes now! Landscaping is starting today and I cannot wait to see how it transforms the venue. It is going to be beautiful! We are to the point where we can start ordering furniture, mirrors, and light fixtures. Yesssss…The fun stuff!

I also want to take a moment and thank y’all for being so supportive and cheering us on throughout this process. I love all of the shares on social media and being stopped at Walmart to tell us how good the venue is looking. I feel incredibly lucky to watch my dream come true and to also have a huge amount of support from the community. So, thank you!

Okay, the reason you are here… See below the pictures of the progress!

5 Tips on Getting Healthy for Your Wedding

Before we get started, I want to say that healthy does not equal skinny. Your beauty is not measured by your pant size. I’m going to say that again for the people in the back. Your BEAUTY is not measured by your PANT SIZE. Starving yourself will leave you miserable and in the end, you won’t be happy on the happiest day of your life. Disclaimer: I am not a nutritionist or personal trainer, but this is advice I wish I would have known when starting my fitness and health journey.

With that being said, here are 5 tips on making you HEALTHY for your big day.

Drink Water

If you know me, you know how passionate I am about drinking my water. There are so many benefits, but I’ll highlight just a few. Drinking water flushes out the toxins in your body, helps your body digest your food, and delivers oxygen throughout your body. Do you ever have a headache and then remember you haven’t had any water that day? Your brain needs the oxygen from the water to function! Lastly, but most obviously, It keeps you hydrated giving you more energy and mental clarity throughout your day. This is especially important during wedding planning mode.

Start small with a few bottles of water a day, and then work your way up until you get to the recommended amount - 3 liters a day.

If you’re looking for a water bottle, I carry my Hydrojug with me every where I go. The jug holds 2 liters of water and is just really freaking cute. I have an affiliated link with them that I’ll share below! (Tip: If you get a straw, it makes drinking water 10 times easier)

Move Your Body

This one is obvious, but exercise! Working out at least 20 minutes a day will make such a difference, physically and mentally. Find what you enjoy and do it consistently. Yoga, weight lifting, spin, running, walking, etc. Your options are endless. Try different things out and find what works for YOU. I love lifting weights but you might enjoy hot yoga. Everyone is different.

Whatever it is, working out is going to relieve you of the stress you are holding. I cannot emphasize this enough, but girl move your body.

Each Nutrient-Dense Foods

Basically, stop eating crap. I’m talking candy, McDonald’s, coke, processed foods. Eat more nutrient-dense foods like leafy greens, fruit, and lean protein. I’m not saying you need to restrict yourself because it’s all about balance - the 80/20 rule. 80% of the food you eat is whole nutrient-dense foods, 20% of the food you eat is what you are craving. Don’t go on a diet or starve yourself, but eat the foods that provide nutrients for your body.

I track my food with the app MyFitnessPal. It allows me to see what I’m putting in my body and if I have room to eat that blueberry donut.

Sleeeeeeeep

This one is easy to neglect. You need 6-8 hours of sleep every night. It varies depending on the person because personally, I need like 9 hours of sleep. Sleep is so important because it’s giving your body a chance to rebuild muscle tissues from working out, replenish cells and restore energy after a long day of wedding planning.

Stop Obsessing over what You Look Like

You are surrounded by people who love YOU, not how much you weigh or how pretty you are, but you as person. They wouldn’t love you any more or any less if you looked different. Having negative thoughts about your body creates such a toxic internal relationship. I’ve always heard “if you wouldn’t say it to a friend, then don’t say it to yourself”. Obsessing over your body will bring you on a roller coaster of emotions and that is unhealthy for your body and your mind. So love yourself and give yourself some grace. The results will follow.

So many girls starve themselves and do endless amounts of cardio to prepare for their wedding, trust me I was one of them. Looking back, it left me exhausted physically and mentally. I was a basket case trying to get skinny for the wedding day and some would say a bride-zilla. Don’t be like me. Enjoy this time and use working out as an outlet to relieve stress and eat the right foods to fuel you body and brain. You deserve to be your healthiest and happiest self come your wedding day.

Construction Update - Bridal Suite Edition

The Bridal Suite is slowly becoming one of my favorites at Four Fifteen Estates. So much thought goes into designing a space for brides to get ready for the big day. We wanted to create a space for you to have as your own so why not build the cutest little house?! With natural lighting, plenty of vanity space, and unique touches here and there, we hope you love it as much as we do!

As you can see from the pictures below, the bridal suite is (almost) complete. A couple of items to check off include setting the toilet (fun stuff I know), hanging mirrors, installing faucets, cleaning, aaaaaand moving in furniture. The next time you’ll see the construction update - bridal suite edition, she will be styled and ready for the first wedding!
