You’re engaged—congratulations! Now comes one of the biggest (and most exciting!) decisions in the wedding planning process: choosing your venue.
Your wedding venue sets the tone for your entire day. It influences everything from your guest list and décor to your timeline, vendors, photos, and overall experience. With so many beautiful venues to choose from, it can be easy to fall in love with how a space looks without thinking about how it will actually function on your wedding day.
Before you sign a contract, here are some of the most important things to consider when choosing the perfect wedding venue.
1. Does It Fit Your Wedding Style?
Before getting caught up in the little details, ask yourself one simple question: Can I picture us getting married here?
Think about the overall feeling you want your wedding to have. Elegant and timeless? Romantic and intimate? Modern? Traditional? Outdoor and natural?
Choosing a venue that already complements your vision means you won’t have to completely transform the space with décor. Look at the ceremony and reception spaces, architecture, landscaping, lighting, and even the places you’ll use for photos.
The right venue should feel like a beautiful backdrop for your wedding—not like you have to work against the space to create the look you want.
2. Are There Indoor AND Outdoor Ceremony Options?
Even if you’ve always dreamed of an outdoor ceremony, having a beautiful indoor backup option is incredibly important.
Weather is one of the few parts of your wedding day that no one can control. Rain, wind, extreme heat, or cold can quickly change your plans, and you don’t want your backup ceremony location to feel like an afterthought.
When touring venues, ask to see every ceremony option available and find out what happens if weather forces you to change your plans.

3. Is There Enough Space for Your Guest Count?
Before touring venues, it’s helpful to have at least an estimated guest count.
Ask how many guests the venue can comfortably accommodate—not just the maximum number technically allowed.
You’ll want enough room for your tables and chairs while still having space for your dance floor, DJ or band, cake, catering setup, photo booth, and any other special elements you’re planning.
And most importantly, there should still be room for your guests to comfortably move around and enjoy themselves!
4. What Is Actually Included?
Wedding venue pricing can be difficult to compare because every venue includes something different.
One venue may appear less expensive initially but require you to rent tables, chairs, décor, or other essentials separately. Another may include many of those items in the rental price.
Before booking, ask exactly what comes with your venue rental.
Some things to ask about include:
Tables and chairs
Ceremony seating
Getting-ready spaces
Décor
Setup and cleanup
Rehearsal time
On-site staff
Parking
Kitchen or catering space
Sound equipment
Additional rental options
Knowing exactly what is included will help you compare the true cost of each venue rather than simply comparing the initial rental price.
5. Are the Getting-Ready Spaces Functional?
You’ll spend a significant portion of your wedding day getting ready, so don’t overlook these spaces during your tour!
Look for plenty of mirrors, good lighting, comfortable seating, bathrooms, climate control, and enough room for your wedding party.
Also consider whether both sides of the wedding party have designated spaces. Having everything on-site can make the wedding morning feel much more relaxed and eliminates unnecessary traveling before the ceremony.
6. What Will Your Wedding Photos Look Like?
Your venue will be the backdrop for hundreds—possibly thousands—of photographs from your wedding day.
As you tour, look beyond the ceremony and reception spaces. Ask yourself where you’ll take wedding-party photos, family portraits, couple portraits, and golden-hour photos.
Beautiful architecture, natural light, trees, open spaces, landscaping, and interesting indoor locations can give your photographer plenty of variety without requiring you to leave the property.
7. Is There On-Site Lodging or Nearby Accommodation?
If you have family or friends traveling for your wedding, accommodations are worth considering early in the planning process.
On-site lodging can make the wedding weekend especially convenient for your closest family and friends. It can also eliminate some of the stress of transportation before and after the celebration.

8. What Are the Vendor Policies?
Every venue handles vendors differently.
Some require couples to choose from a preferred vendor list, while others allow you more flexibility. Before booking, find out what vendors you’re responsible for hiring and whether there are any restrictions.
Be sure to ask about policies surrounding:
Catering
Bartending and alcohol
DJs and bands
Florists and decorators
Photographers and videographers
Coordinators
Rental companies
Understanding these policies before you book prevents surprises later in the planning process.
9. How Much Time Do You Actually Get at the Venue?
This is a BIG one!
Two venues may charge similar prices while offering completely different rental periods.
Ask what time you can arrive, when vendors can begin setup, how long your reception can last, and when everyone needs to leave.
A longer rental period gives you more breathing room throughout the day. No one wants to feel rushed while getting ready or have vendors scrambling to complete setup minutes before guests arrive.
10. Are There Any Additional Fees?
Before signing your contract, ask about costs beyond the initial venue rental.
Depending on the venue, there may be additional charges for cleaning, security, overtime, ceremony spaces, rehearsal time, setup, staff, or other services.
There’s nothing wrong with a venue offering optional upgrades or additional services—you just want to understand those costs from the beginning so you can accurately plan your wedding budget.
11. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?
Hopefully, everything goes exactly according to plan—but weddings involve a lot of moving pieces.
Ask who will be available on the wedding day if there is a venue-related question or issue. Find out what the venue’s policies are regarding weather, emergencies, cancellations, postponements, and other unexpected circumstances.
A beautiful venue matters, but having clear policies and people you can rely on matters too.
12. How Does the Venue Make You Feel?
Finally, pay attention to how you feel while you’re there.
Can you picture yourself walking down the aisle?
Can you imagine your family sitting together at the reception?
Can you see your friends filling the dance floor?
Does the space feel like you?
